The City of Claxton, Bellville and Evans County Residents are invited to take an important step toward discussing the future of our fire services.

Representatives from Claxton, Bellville and Evans County will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13, at 6:00 PM at the Veterans Community Center to discuss the possibility of merging our two fire departments.

This meeting is an opportunity to come together, share ideas, and discuss how working together could benefit our firefighters and the communities we serve.

Your fire protection, public safety, and the future of our community matter. We encourage community members to stay informed and engaged as these discussions move forward.

Why Public Natural Gas Matters to our Community This year, October 4-10 is Public Natural Gas Week, a time when communities such as ours give recognition to one of their most valuable community assets—their publicly owned natural gas utility. We are dedicating this week to educating our community about the benefits of having a public natural gas utility in addition to promoting the overall benefits of natural gas for your fueling and heating needs. There are approximately 1,000 public natural gas utilities in the United States. Most are small and comprised of a few hundred to a few thousand customers. Despite their size, they have a huge impact on the communities they serve by providing a vital function of safely delivering affordable and efficient natural gas. Our customers recognize the need to access reliable and affordable energy and having a local public natural gas utility is the best way to do that. There are many other benefits of having a public natural gas utility, for example: Public natural gas utilities are directly accountable to the citizens they serve, and decisions regarding your energy needs are made locally through citizen participation instead of being made outside of the community. Public natural gas utilities are locally controlled, which help ensures that rates remain competitive. This is especially reassuring as energy and fuel prices continue to rise and affect your family’s bottom line. Lastly, public natural gas can play a valuable role in helping broaden our tax base and helps local dollars stay at home. We also work with local financial institutions and make purchases from local businesses. This, in turn, supports the local economy and helps create jobs. We’re here for our community and invite you to join us this week at the variety of events we will host. Evans County is currently updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan, and we want to hear from you!

Your input is an important part of identifying the natural hazards that affect our community and determining what Evans County can do to reduce the potential impacts of future disasters.

We are asking residents, businesses, organizations, and community members to provide input on:

🔹 Are there areas, roads, facilities, infrastructure, neighborhoods, or populations that you believe are particularly vulnerable?
🔹 What problems did you experience during previous disasters, including Hurricane Helene or Tropical Storm Debby?

CITY OF CLAXTON PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY – JULY 4TH EVENTS The City of Claxton is advising residents that all gatherings and events must be conducted in compliance with Georgia law, fire codes, and public safety requirements. Due to increased safety risks associated with large holiday gatherings, any organized event that impacts public safety may require advance coordination with local authorities and approval prior to occurring. This includes events involving: * Large crowds or organized public gatherings * Use of amplified sound or entertainment * Fireworks or pyrotechnics * Any activity affecting traffic flow or emergency access Where applicable, event approval may require: * Proof of event liability insurance * Compliance with fire safety and occupancy limits * Adequate property size to prevent overcrowding * No obstruction of streets, sidewalks, or emergency access routes * Sanitation and waste control plans The use of fireworks must strictly comply with Georgia law. Unsafe, reckless, or unlawful use of fireworks or other hazardous activity will result in immediate enforcement action. Law enforcement will be actively monitoring and responding to violations including disorderly conduct, reckless behavior, unlawful fireworks use, and any conditions that present a threat to public safety. The City of Claxton strongly encourages all residents and property owners to prioritize safety and ensure all events are conducted responsibly and lawfully. -Mayor Terry Branch
